Know What Your Hair Type Needs
The best way to have and maintain healthy hair is understanding what type of hair you have. Knowing this will help you care for it and determine was products you need.
HAIR TEXTURE
There are generally three types of hair textures: fine/ thin, medium and course/ thick
FINE / THIN HAIR
It is considered to be the most delicate texture as it can be easily damaged. It also tends to be oilier than other hair types, thus making it hard to hold a hairstyle.
MEDIUM HAIR
It is the most common hair texture and usually appears as thick. It is easier to style then thin/ fine hair.
THICK / COURSE HAIR
Thick hair appears full and holds styles. It is strong and can withstand chemical treatments, heat and breakage.
HAIR TYPES
There are four hair types: straight, wavy, curly, and kinky/coiled. Within each, there are subcategories. Each type of these have different needs that need to be met to keep hair healthy and strong.
TYPE 1 – STRAIGHT HAIR
If you have any type of straight hair, here are some things you should do.
Wash Hair Regularly – You should wash hair regularly with shampoo to avoid oily-looking locks. You should buy shampoos that are formulated to prevent oil build-up.
Don’t Sleep With Wet Hair – Don’t sleeping with wet hair to stop frizz, but if you need to sleep with damp hair, use leave-in conditioner and loosely tie hair up.
Use Natural Hair Products – While hair seems to lack of volume, don’t overcompensating with a lot of products, find products that contain natural ingredients to preserve your natural hair oils. This also provides your hair with a healthy boost without weighing it down.
Use Products To Keep Style Intact – To keep hairstyles intact, use finishing spray or hairspray.
TYPE 2 & 3 – WAVY & CURLY HAIR
If you have any type of wavey or curly hair, here are some things you should do.
Hydrate – As this hair type has less natural oils, it is important to use sulfate-free shampoo to make sure hair is not stripped of its natural moisture.
Avoid Heat – reduce using hot styling tools or chemical hair treatments as it can damage the cuticle layer of your hair shaft. If you do use them, use heat-protection products to protect your hair.
TYPE 4 – COILED / KINKY HAIR
If you have any type of coiled or kinky hair, here are some things you should do.
Moisturise – Before washing hair with shampoo and conditioner, apply a moisturizing hair mask and work it into your hair and then follow up with a moisturising sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioner to keep the silky sheen and health.
Dry Hair Properly – As this hair type is dry, it is best to not use a hair or blow dryer to prevent frizz and dry. Instead, air-dry hair to reduce breakage and unnecessary dryness. Use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help give more moisture and defines curls.
