How to take care of your curly hair
Curly hair will always get compliments, but we all know there is a difference between a good curly hair day and a bad one.
Curly hair is harder to manage than straight hair, in the sense of washing, drying and styling, as curly hair tends to lack moisture, leaving it dry and frizzy and without those beautifully defined curls.
But, with the right routine, products and care, everyday can be a good curly hair day.
WASHING AND DRYING ROUTINE
Washing and drying your hair is the first step in a hair care routine. Washing your hair correctly and implementing the right steps for curly hair ensure hair is not only clean, healthy and strong but helps to make curls more defines and more manageable.
How Often You Should Wash Your Hair
You should be washing your hair once every 2 to 3 days, as washing everyday removes all natural oils from curly hair, making it more dry and frizzy and loosing the shape of the curls.
As for what temperature you should be washing your hair in, cold water is the way to go. Using hot water strips natural oils from the scalp and hair. Hot water also opens up the cuticle, making hair more likely to frizz and suffer from breakage.Â
 Choosing The Right Shampoo
Using the right shampoo and one that is particularly for your hair type and texture it crucial for any hair type but especially for curly hair.Â
Using shampoo made for curly hair is so important as they are made with ingredients that aim to not only clean hair and rid get rid of build up but bring back and maintain moisture, hydrate the hair and rid frizz and restore the natural shape and pattern of the curls.
It is also so vital to use shampoos that are Sulfate free, fragrance free, silicon free and Paraben free, as these ingredients effect how well it works and can impact the look and feel of the curl
Conditioners And Masks
Similar to choosing the right shampoo for your hair and that contains the right ingredients, same with choosing conditioners and/or hair masks.Â
Conditioner and masks will help to give your hair that deep hydration, moisture and protection it needs that isn’t achievable with shampoo alone.
Just like shampoo, conditioners and masks should match the needs and type of hair you have, in this case curly hair. Curly hair conditioners and mask treatments aim to instil hair with hydration, lock in moisture, repair breakage and damage and protect against environmental factors, keeping curls soft and bouncy. These products are made to weigh down and define curls for a cleaner look while not frizzing the hair and misshaping the curls.
Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Something people don’t know is that conditioner or a mask doesn’t only have to be used after shampooing your hair, it can, and for curly hair should be, used before and after shampoo.Â
As curly hair tends to lack and loose moisture, using a conditioner or a deep conditioning mask before shampooing aids in protecting hair fibres and strands, so the shampoo doesn’t strip it of any natural oils and its shape, as well as helps detangles and de-frizzes the hair.
A pre-shampoo conditioning treatment should be done before getting the hair wet. Apply a hair mask or conditioner or conditioning oil to dry hair. Leave it sitting in hair for up to 20 minutes, doing this makes sure that the conditioner or mask is really and fully absorbed by the hair.
Drying Hair
When it comes to drying the hair, the best option for curly hair is to let it air dry which allows curls to naturally form on their own.
If you want to help the drying process move along quicker, the best thing to do is to scrunch your hair and dry with a microfibre towel or cotton shirt. If you are going to use a towel, make sure its a microfibre towel as the texture of normal towels create friction on the hair cuticle, leading to frizz and knots.
If you are using a blow dryer, in order to get the best results, use a diffuser. This helps control the amount of heat that the hair is receiving. Using a diffuser keeps curls from being tossed around, thus creating less friction and frizz, allowing for healthy and defines curls.
Leave-In Conditioner
Using a leave-in conditioner is important as, due to the texture of curly hair and how it is prone to be dry and frizzy, conditioning your hair in the shower isn’t enough. As curls need more care, it needs long lasting moisture and protection to make sure curls don’t loose their shape and become knotted.

Other Tips For Curly Hair
Here are some more things you should and shouldn’t be doing to make sure everyday is a good curly hair day.
Sleep RoutineÂ
To ensure your curls stay fresh and intact, it is best to sleep with your hair in a bun that resembles a sort of pile or pineapple on top of your head or a loose pony. Doing this makes sure there isn’t too much friction being creates by our hair rubbing on the pillow.
Brushing Hair
If you have curly hair, you should not brush your curls! Brushing or combing your hair, wet or dry, will cause curls to break in shape and pattern as well as lead to breakage of the hair.Â
One of the only times a brush should be be used is to brush conditioner through the hair while washing it, to do this, a wide toothed comb should only be used.Â
The other time curls should be combed is to detangle and get rid of knots. When doing this, only the ends of the hair should be brushed, because doing this allows to gently detangle while keep the curl’s shape and not creating frizz throughout the rest of the hair.Â
 Heat
High temperatures or too much heat on your curls can make them loose their natural shape and texture, leaving them lifeless, flat, misshaped and messy. If you are going to put heat on your curls, you should be using a good quality heat protector to make sure your curls keep its bounce and life.
